The Wenham Police Department Reminds Residents to Celebrate Responsibly

While holiday gatherings and new years are a time to celebrate, it is important to remember to celebrate responsibly.

Driving while impaired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal and can be deadly.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2023 about 12,429 people were killed in drunk driving crashes nationwide. The legal drinking age is 21 years old and individuals who drink should do so responsibly.

When celebrating:

  • Alternate alcohol and a glass of water
  • Eat a full meal before partying
  • Drink slowly. Don’t chug!
  • Don’t accept drinks from strangers
  • Don’t drink while taking medication

If you are attending a party, remember to plan ahead and arrange for safe transportation to and from the gathering. This can include designating a sober driver or using a ride share app.

Hosts are reminded to never let guests drive home under the influence.

Report any drunk drivers on the road by calling 911. The best defense against an impaired driver is wearing a seatbelt, and everyone in the vehicle should do so at all times.

Have a safe holiday season and drive sober.
