Wenham Police Conduct Active Shooter Training at The Academy at Penguin Hall

WENHAM — Chief Thomas Perkins announces that members of the Wenham Police Department successfully completed an intensive, three-day active shooter training.

The training was conducted Feb. 9-11 at The Academy at Penguin Hall, an independent college-preparatory high school for young women, located at 36 Essex St.

Officers engaged in reality-based training to handle situations like burglar alarms, building searches in large facilities, low-light search techniques, tactical entry and room clearing, hostage situations, Combat Application Tourniquets, compliant subjects, unarmed non-compliant people, small unit movements, solo engagement tactics, officer rescue, tactical medical priorities and advanced first aid.

Sgt. Christopher Machain, of the Wenham Police Department’s training division, led active shooter drills with the assistance of Officer Steve Farinato and firearms instructors Chad Labrie and David Marsh. The scenarios were designed to place officers in moderate to high stress situations to perfect their responses to critical incidents.

“We strive to keep our community safe and are grateful to have been granted the opportunity to conduct this training at a top notch facility,” Chief Perkins said. “There has been a paradigm shift in law enforcement to train and equip patrol units to deal with advanced threats and this type of training is necessary to successfully mitigate critical incidents.”

Chief Perkins would like to thank Molly Martins, President of The Academy, for generously allowing the Wenham Police Department to use the entire campus for their training.
