Wenham Police Hold Bicycle Rodeo for Kids at Buker School

WENHAM — By the looks of things at The Friends of Buker School’s Bicycle Rodeo on Wednesday, May, 21, it wasn’t the students’ first rodeo! The event, held for students in grades K-5, was accident-free thanks in large part to members of the Wenham Police Department, who performed bicycle helmet safety checks and promoted safe biking in preparation for the upcoming summer months.

Thanks to a Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Grant, the Wenham Police Department was able to procure a number of bicycle helmets for Buker students and other Wenham children who were unable to purchase appropriate head gear or who were identified as having unsafe bicycle helmets. A counselor at the school identified students in need who were then discreetly issued new helmets so they could participate in the rodeo.

“I am pleased to say that it looks like all 125 students who participated in our Bicycle Rodeo enjoyed the day!” said Wenham Police Officer William Foley. “I would like to thank Pinnacle Bikes of Beverly for their assistance and expertise during the event as well as The Friends of Buker School for the planning and set up of this program.”

The Wenham Police Department would also like to give special congratulations to the special Buker Bike Rodeo winners, divided by age category. The winners are:

Ages 5 and 6 – Kathryn Gasiorowski, Gus Tratnyek, and Bruce Danaher
Ages 7 and 8 – Evan Haughey, Charlie Collins, and Joseph Coughlin
Ages 9 and 10 – Niko Collins, Sam Coues, and Claire Kurja
Ages 11 and 12 – Nathaniel Stanwood, Zack Walles, Doug Baker, and Christopher Batten
